Chapter Eight

Vaska Karkov was a few miles south of the Yelish Ford when he had his first flashback.

It came roaring into his head on a tide that could almost have been physical; he was dimly aware of nearly being knocked off his horse as he relived the scene in his mind's eye.

Crumlov was there, scourging him with a whip studded with iron nuggets, tearing the flesh off his naked back as Vladi and Irma prodded him with their blades, casually drawing more blood. The townsfolk of Rostok looked on impassively, some of them leering, a few even cheering. His constables were nowhere in sight, but then they hadn't been anywhere to be seen for days, leaving him at the mercy of Crumlov and his gang.

Stumbling along the trail out of town, Vaska tripped and fell hard on his knees. His hands were bound, making it difficult to break his fall; his knee gaped red as a rock tore the skin off it. A third outlaw, Andrey, stepped up and cudgelled him upside the head, making his vision swim. He was dimly aware of being yanked to his feet, and when his vision cleared he saw Jenna in the crowd, staring at him reproachfully, tears streaking her comely face...
